Cutleaf toothwort is blooming in the Kindergarten Woods!This spring ephemeral is named for the tooth-like shape of its rhizome and deeply-cut lobes of its leaves. Each leaf has 3-5 narrow lobes that are sharply toothed along the margin. Its single flowering stalk has a whorl of 3 basal leaves and terminates into a small collection of 3-15 white flowers that are sometimes tinted with light pink or purple colors. Each flower has 4 petals and its blooming period lasts for about two weeks, until the flowers are replaced by elongated seed pods. Cutleaf toothwort propagates via seeds and rhizomes. This woodland perennial is edible and has medicinal properties. The roots of the plant are spicy and taste similar to radishes. Once chopped, they can be boiled or eaten raw and make an excellent addition to soups, salads, and stews. Ground roots mixed with vinegar and salt make a substitute for horseradish, while its leaves, stems, and flowers can be used as aromatic ingredients and salad greens. Cutleaf toothwort can be used to treat headaches, common colds, and as an appetite stimulant. It can also remedy heart ailments.Cutleaf toothwort is common in Wisconsin but can be rare in other states. Before harvesting this plant, make sure it is abundant in your area as removing its roots will prevent it from growing back.What other signs of spring do you see?
