SUMMARY:Barrow Tales: Climate & Culture in the Arctic
DESCRIPTION:A special presentation by Dr. Cathy Middlecamp and Dr. Robert Rabin \n“We just couldn’t turn down the invitation to spend a week teaching climate change in Barrow\, Alaska.  But what were we getting ourselves into?  Surely those living north of the arctic circle knew more about sea ice and the melting tundra than we did. \nBarrow is located 500 miles north of Fairbanks. There are no roads in this sparsely populated\, vast region. One can imagine a similarity to some aspects of life in North America before European settlement. The Barrow community and the smaller villages depend heavily on subsidence living. The connection with the environment is very strong.  There seems to be a keen awareness and concern of the effects of the weather on food supply (whaling\, hunting caribou\, etc). Indeed\, after two summers at Ilisagvik College\, our students taught us far more than we taught them. Even so\, we have a standing invitation to return.” \nVisit the Aldo Leopold Nature Center on January 23\, 2014 for the next in our lecture series on nature\, climate and culture. Dr. Cathy Middlecamp (UW-Madison) and Dr. Robert Rabin (NOAA/National Severe Storms Laboratory) will share their experiences teaching at Ilisagvik College in Barrow\, Alaska\, through photos and stories of earth\, air\, ice\, fire\, and water that connected them\, their students\, and the arctic landscape. \nThe lecture is free and open to the public\, and will be followed at 7:00 PM by a guided tour of the Aldo Leopold Nature Center’s Climate Science Education Center\, including a special presentation on Science On a Sphere ($4/participant\, or free for Aldo Leopold Nature Center members). \nPre-registration for the lecture and tour are not required\, but you may pre-register here to secure a spot in the lecture. Pre-Registration Closed [4:45pm 1/23]. \n
