SUMMARY:Public Lecture: Live from Antarctica! / En Vivo Desde Antártida!
DESCRIPTION:Juan Botella\, PolarTREC teacher researcher and science teacher at Monona Grove High School\, followed his dream of becoming an oceanographer when he went to Antarctica in 2011 to study the changes in seawater properties due to climate change. He assisted with studies aboard the research icebreaker Nathanial B. Palmer\, from the McMurdo Station in Antarctica\, through the Southern Ocean and Drake Passage to Chile. He loved it so much\, he’s heading to the McMurdo Station again this January! In this very special public lecture\, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center will host an interactive chat with Juan\, live from Antarctica. This bilingual program will include web-based presentations and Q&A sessions in both English and Spanish. Learn from Juan about his upcoming neutron monitor work at the McMurdo Research Station in Antarctica with UW-River Falls\, details about life in an Antarctic research station\, and his work teaching students and others in the community about the relationships between oceans\, glaciers\, ecosystems\, and climate. \nUPDATE: Due to unexpected events\, Juan Botella was unable to travel to Antarctica this month. He will be leading this talk in-person at ALNC\, with Professor Jim Madsen from UW-River Falls joining live from McMurdo Station in Antarctica. \nThis bilingual English/Spanish program is in partnership with “El Universo es Tuyo” (The Universe Is Yours). The presentation is free and open to the public. We also invite you to visit the Aldo Leopold Nature Center’s Climate Science Education Center\, featuring Polar Express programming all month long. Exhibit admission is free for lecture attendees on the evening of Jan 19 – though donations are appreciated! Pre-registration for the lecture is recommended as space is limited. \n  \n
