This spring, ticks are out in full force!Ticks can spread a number of different diseases, and the best way to stay clear of them is to not have a tick attached to you for a long period of time. When enjoying time outdoors, use preventative measures to avoid ticks, such as wearing hats, long-sleeved shirts, and close-toed shoes. Also, avoid walking through tall vegetation and use insect repellent.Other preventative measures include showering within two hours of coming indoors and conducting thorough tick checks. It’s also recommended to wash clothing worn outside or throw them in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks. Don’t forget to also treat pets with flea and tick control products. If, despite all these measures, you find a tick embedded on your body, remove it as soon as possible. Grasp the tick with pointed tweezers, as close as possible to the skin, and pull upward and out with a firm and steady hand. Do not squeeze, crush, or puncture the body of the tick. Do not twist the tick, since this can cause the mouthparts to break off and stay in the skin.This year, ALNC is participating in the Marshfield Clinic Tick Study where we submit the ticks we find using their collection kits. If you would like to request your own kits, you can email the researchers at tics@marshfieldclinic.org.
