As always, our grounds and trails featuring self-guided tours are free and open daily from dawn until dusk.

Every month, a Welcoming Schools e-newsletter makes its rounds at ALNC. This newsletter, written in-house by Ms. Ana and based on lessons from Welcoming Schools, shares, activities, talking points, and book recommendations that help to make our space inclusive. This month's theme is Embracing All Families and it’s a topic that comes up frequently as kids learn about each other. Sometimes children have a lot of questions when they engage with families that don’t look like their own. It’s important to have conversations with kids to help address the reality that not all kids experience life in the same way that they do.This month's activity encourages kids to reflect about what their family looks like. You can do this at home or in the classroom by having children draw a heart and then ask them to write or draw all the people in their lives who love them. Some great books that align with the theme and inspire conversation around family compositions include:‘And Tango Makes Three’ by Justin Richardson, lifting up families with two dads*‘Two Homes, One Heart’ by Jessica Young, lifting up families where the parents are separated‘A Tale of Two Mommies’ by Vanita Oelschalger, lifting up families with two moms‘Monkey Not Ready for the Baby’ by Marc Brown, lifting up families about to welcome a new baby‘A Family is a Family is a Family’ by Sara O'Leary, lifting up all types of families*Families come in all shapes and sizes and, at ALNC, we embrace them all! *Books that can be found on the 2022-2023 PEN America Index of School Book Bans.
