Today, we would like to highlight Christian Cooper, a celebrated naturalist, author, and Emmy-winning host of “Extraordinary Birder”.Christian Cooper has been birding from a young age and, after practicing his hobby for many years, he was involved in a viral incident in 2020, you might be familiar with it. Long story short, he tried to hold someone accountable for their actions and the person called the police, using Cooper’s race to imply she was in danger. The incident brought awareness to the fact that innocent hobbies in public spaces can become dangerous for people of color.Cooper decided to turn this experience into something positive, combining his passions for birding and writing to write a New York Times bestseller “Better Living Through Birding: Notes from a Black Man in the Natural World”. Around the same time he was writing this book, he was also hosting the documentary series “Extraordinary Birder” where he traveled to new destinations, while sharing his passion for birds and conservation. To this day, Christian Cooper continues to share his passion for birds with the recent release of his first children's book, “The Urban Owls: How Flaco and Friends Made the City Their Home”.An event featuring Christian Cooper will be hosted at the Overture Center on Wednesday March 12th thanks to the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts, & Letters. Come hear (or listen virtually) about Cooper's journey in the world of birding and learn about how birds create connections—between people, communities, and the natural world.
