Not all nests found in trees belong to birds.
Gray squirrel nests, known as dreys, often look like large, untidy bundles of twigs and leaves. They are commonly seen tucked into large forked branches but can also be found inside natural holes in tree trunks or cavities created by woodpeckers. Each drey is built with several layers of soft, warm materials that provide insulation and shelter. Most squirrels construct multiple dreys within their territory as backups and may even have separate summer and winter homes. During especially cold winter spells, two squirrels may sometimes share a drey to help keep warm.
