The OAKS After-School students met with the International Crane Foundation!![]()

The group learned about the challenges cranes must overcome during migration and made it interactive with a game. They pretended to be cranes flying from wetland to wetland to forage and rest during migration. The goal of the game was to jump inside the yellow circles that represent rest stops used by cranes during migration. ![]()

The first round was easy and all the little OAKS “cranes” made it because there were plenty of wetlands on the way but the subsequent rounds became more challenging as the cranes had to face new threats, including habitat loss, pollution, and predators. To illustrate these challenges, the children had to dodge balls thrown by “predators” and jump in circles that were fewer in number and reduced in size. Under these conditions, many of the youngest “cranes” weren’t able to make the jumps between rest stops. ![]()

The group played additional rounds and discussed ways to address these challenges, such as wetland restoration and remediation to remove pollutants from the environment and create healthier and safer habitats. The game ended on that positive note, emphasizing that conservation starts with caring about the environment and becomes possible through observation and action!![]()
