Have you ever sneakily attached bedstraw to someone’s clothing?This playful weed is a favorite among children—and mischievous adults—thanks to its natural stickiness. Known by many names, including cleavers, sticky weed, sticky willy, turkey tangle, Velcro plant, goosegrass, and stick-tights, this distinctive plant is both entertaining and useful.There are approximately 650 species in the Galium genus, most of which are generally considered safe and, in some cases, edible. The most widely recognized and commonly used species is ‘Galium aparine’, valued for its medicinal and nutritional properties. Rich in magnesium, calcium, potassium, and vitamins A, C, E, and K (through its chlorophyll content), this plant is known for its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. It supports urinary tract health, promotes detoxification, soothes skin irritations, and may aid the lymphatic system by encouraging lymph flow and reducing swollen lymph nodes.To identify ‘Galium aparine’, look for 6 to 8 stalkless leaves arranged in whorls around a square-shaped stem. The leaves are narrow, widest near the tip, and end in a small point. When in bloom, the plant produces tiny white flowers nestled among the leaves. It typically has a single, long, unbranched stem. In contrast, other Galium species may feature pointed leaves, branched stems, or clusters of blossoms at the tips.The best time to harvest bedstraw is in early spring, when the young shoots first emerge. At this stage, the plant lacks the tiny hooked hairs that make mature plants sticky and less palatable.
