Chickadees have an incredible metabolism that helps them survive the coldest winter nights. To save energy, they lower their body temperature by about 12–15°F while they sleep. Even then, they may need to shiver to stay warm, burning through much of the fat they stored during the day.![]()

Fortunately, chickadees are expert refuelers! They can gain up to 10% of their body weight in fat each day, and in winter they eat far more than usual to keep up with the demand.![]()
