Turtles, along with other reptiles and amphibians, enter a low-energy state in winter called brumation. When ponds freeze, they can’t breathe air at the surface, so they absorb oxygen from the water using cloacal respiration — in other words, “butt-breathing”! Even as oxygen runs out, some turtles can survive for up to five months without any oxygen at all.![]()
