Can you see me?
Underwing moths are masters of camouflage. Their forewings closely resemble tree bark, helping them disappear against trunks during the day. But when they take flight, they reveal brilliant hindwings splashed with orange, red, yellow, or pink, often accented with bold black bands. This sudden flash of color can startle or confuse a pursuing predator, creating just enough hesitation for the moth to make its escape.
There are more than 100 species of underwing moths (Catocala) in North America, and many look remarkably similar, making identification a challenge. According to the Seek app, this individual, spotted in the Basswood Forest, is likely an Ultronia Underwing (Catocala ultronia).
