Last week, the Nature Preschoolers celebrated Aldo

Last week, the Nature Preschoolers celebrated Aldo’s 138th Birthday!
The Chickadees hiked to the Children’s Shack and read a story about Aldo Leopold inside. The Children’s shack is a 3/4 size replica of Aldo Leopold’s Shack in Sauk County, where Aldo and his family spent many weekends practicing phenology by recording their observations of the natural world.
The Nature Preschoolers also practiced their observation skills by making a ‘bird-day’ cake to attract winter birds. They left the cake on the Nature Preschool back porch and observed which feathery friends joined the celebration from the comfort of their classroom!

Join us THIS SATURDAY for the Candlelight Hike at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center!
On January 18th, from 4:30 to 7:00pm, explore the Nature Center and Edna Taylor Conservancy by hiking trails lit by glowing candles during this unique winter adventure. After your hike, roast a s’more and warm yourself at a winter fire. Enjoy hot cocoa and food carts for a fee.
Enter the drawing to win a pair of snowshoes or other winter gear, generously donated by Fontana and Play It Again Sports. Free parking and free shuttle service at Ahuska Park.

The Wonder Bugs aren’t scaredy cats. Last week

The Wonder Bugs aren’t scaredy cats.
Last week the Wonder Bugs learned about bobcats, one of the three wild cats that can be found in Wisconsin. They talked about how bobcats are different from house cats and learned interesting facts by reading a bobcat book.
After their lesson, they went on an outdoor adventure, pretending to be bobcats! First, the group looked for prey and found a hole that showed signs of an animal hiding inside. Then, their bravery and walked out onto the frozen pond. On the pond, they batted around a clump of frozen snow, as if they were playing hockey, and investigated the tadpoles frozen in the ice. They ended their adventure with a game of chase between ‘the cubs’ and their parents, where one would pretend to be a rabbit, while the other pretended to be a bobcat.
The Wonder Bugs finished their session with a snack and made a bobcat-themed craft.
