In addition to generating on-site renewable energy through active, passive, and photovoltaic solar systems, the Aldo Leopold Nature Center incorporates features designed to optimize energy and water use through conservation and efficiency.

Daylighting:
A system of exterior and interior windows allows natural sunlight to filter throughout work spaces, reducing the need for electric lighting.

Motion Sensor Lighting:
Motion sensors are installed in key areas to automatically turn lights off when spaces are unoccupied, helping reduce unnecessary energy use.

Insulation:
High-performance insulation plays a key role in conserving energy. The roof, walls, and ground floors are insulated beyond local building code requirements to strengthen the building’s thermal envelope. This enhanced insulation reduces heat loss in winter and limits heat gain in summer, helping maintain comfortable indoor temperatures while lowering heating and cooling demands.

Concrete Flooring:
Heavy concrete floor slabs throughout the facility absorb sunlight entering through south-facing windows. As the concrete warms, it creates thermal mass that slowly releases heat, helping warm interior spaces for several hours.

Water-efficient Toilets:
Kohler Company, a leader in environmentally friendly kitchen and bath fixtures and recipient of the EPA’s WaterSense Award, supplied WaterSense-certified toilets and faucets in select areas of the facility. These high-efficiency fixtures help reduce water use and support long-term conservation.
