Geology Rocks!
August 9, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Calling all rock hounds! This August, learn about geology in our exhibits all month long!
Examine rocks, minerals, fossils, and all the other awesome geological features of our planet. Explore maps, identify minerals, and study fossils at hands-on exploration stations. Learn about the movements of Earth’s crust, view real-time earthquakes across the globe, and much more with stunning Science on a Sphere animations and visuals. Step into the shoes of a geologist, study stratigraphy, find clues in regional land formations, and get a whole new view of Wisconsin’s topography – in 3D! This month’s activities feature maps and resources on loan from the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey.
August programs include:
Geology Playlist – Science on a Sphere: Learn about the movements of Earth’s crust, view real-time earthquakes across the globe, and much more with stunning Science on a Sphere animations and visuals.
Extinction – Orientation Theater: Only a few hundred years ago, extinction made no sense to anyone. The story of “Extinction” explores how advances in geology helped to connect these dots — and touches on why we humans will too, one day, be extinct!
Lava Flow – Immersion Theater: Immerse yourself in a real live lava flow! This US Geological Survey video shows up-close video of lava fountaining from Mt. Kilauea.
Live from Earth’s Crust! – Kids Climate Cast: Give a report about volcanoes, earthquakes, and other exciting activity around Earth’s crust.
Geology Rocks Identification Station – Phenology Center: Can you identify our rocks, minerals, and fossils? Use tools to examine them and use “wild words” to describe their properties.
Geology Detective Exploration Station – Lobby: Geologists and other scientists study the landscape and geological formations of the past to find patterns and relationships that give us clues about the soils, plants, and watersheds across our state. Study detailed maps, use clues, and see what you can discover… and be sure to check out the 3D poster for a whole new view of Wisconsin!
