Prairie Seed Harvest – Land Steward Work Day

October 12 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Join us for a Prairie Seed Harvest, a special Quarterly Earth Day, Land Steward Work Day!

Fall is the season of seeds! Join us on Saturday, October 12th from 10am to Noon at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center to harvest native prairie flower seeds – this is our last Land Steward Work Day of the year. Following a seed harvesting demonstration, where we’ll discuss why we harvest, how we harvest, and identify the specific species to harvest, it’s your turn to trek through the prairie, collecting flower seeds. We’ll close the event by gathering around a fall fire, connecting through conversation with a cup of warm cider.

This family-friendly land stewardship event is geared towards all ages. Spend a crisp fall morning outside, connecting with one another and the land, as well as this important source of life in the prairie, seeds!

Registration is strongly encouraged.

Interested in helping restore and maintain ALNC’s prairie, pond, and woodlands?

Join us the second Saturday of the month, April through October, to help control invasive species, seed with native plants, get dirty, and have some fun! Volunteer work days will focus mainly on land management and other projects as needed. Work days may be cancelled or planned activities modified due to inclement weather.

Pre-registration is not required but strongly encouraged.

This free event is sponsored by MESBA, the Monona East Side Business Alliance, and the Aldo Leopold Nature Center. Special thanks to Quercus Land Stewardship for leading the harvest and processing the prairie seeds.

Examples of Land Steward Work Day projects include:

  • Cutting honeysuckle and other unwanted brush
  • Mulching trails

These work projects involve physical tasks geared towards older kids and adults. Younger children are welcome to attend/observe at the discretion of their guardian. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
