More proof that a Mustelid lives on our grounds!Last spring, one of our staff members caught, on video, a Mustelid in the Kindergarten Woods, and since then our Environmental Educators have been debating if it was a long-tailed weasel or a mink. Long-tailed weasels (Mustela frenata) have brown fur on the upper part of their body and white to yellow fur on their undersides, with a black tipped tail. The population living in the northern area of their range turns white in the winter, retaining the black tip on their tails. American minks (Neovison vison) are slightly longer than long-tailed weasels but are nearly three to four times heavier. Minks also have uniform dark brown coloring in comparison to weasels, except for a small white patch on their chin and, occasionally, other small patches on their throat, chest, and belly. Their tails are progressively darker toward the tip, so the last one-half to one-third of their tail is all black. Unlike weasels, minks have the same color fur throughout the changing seasons.We recently found additional clues about the identity of our Mustelid friend. We found animal tracks that belong to a bounder on the frozen pound. Weasels and minks are both bounders and move by placing both forefeet together on the ground, then swinging their hind feet into nearly the same prints. The tracks appear as two paws that fall side-by-side. Also, our trail cam, located near the pond, captured a picture of our friend! Even though it’s nearly impossible to tell the animal’s size and color from this picture, the fact that both clues were found near our pond leads us to believe that our friend is a mink. Indeed, American mink are semi-aquatic animals, while weasels are found in a wide range of habitats, such as open fields, woodlands, thickets, and roadsides.
