You know it’s mid to late summer when you see ironweed blooming.
Ironweed has bright purple flowers and toothed leaves. It’s been said that this plant gets its common name from its tall stems, which are strong like iron, but it may also be because the seedheads are a brown color similar to iron.
Ironweed belongs to the aster family, which means that this big, puffy flower that looks like a single bloom is actually a tight cluster of tiny individual flowers called florets.
