Northern House Wrens are tiny birds with big appetites and aggressive territorial behavior!
These native songbirds are common in backyards and act as natural pest control, feeding mainly on insects. A single pair can consume thousands of garden insects each season, including earwigs, flies, beetles, aphids, and spiders.
House wrens are also aggressive competitors for nesting sites, sometimes at the expense of Eastern Bluebirds. While they are capable of building their own nests in tree cavities and empty nest boxes, they may also evict current occupants by damaging existing nests and eggs to claim the space for themselves.
Despite their feisty behavior, Northern House Wrens play an important role in our ecosystems and are a welcome sight in many backyards.
