The flashing of fireflies is a magical sight in the summer… but what does it mean?
Each species of firefly has a unique flash pattern and color. Most of the time, the flash is a display from the males, who are waiting for a response from impressed females resting in the dark.
There are some exceptions, however, to this language of love. Flashes can sometimes be used as a death trap. The females of one group of fireflies, called “Photuris”, have learned to mimic the flash patterns used by “Photinus” females to lure males of this other species close enough to eat them.
Fireflies have been disappearing in recent years. You can help support their population by turning off unnecessary outdoor lights and avoiding the use of synthetic pesticides, which can harm these marvelous insects and reduce their survival.
