Our BirdBuddy camera picked up this footage of a female and male ruby-throated hummingbird! Notice how the female does not have the ruby throat.
This is the only species of hummingbird typically found in Wisconsin. They have a super-quick heart rate of up to 1,260 beats per minute to keep those wings beating so fast!
While they may seem delicate, they are quite territorial and will attack and chase each other out of their feeding territory. In the fall, they migrate south, flying nonstop for 18–24 hours! They nearly double their body size in order to store all the energy needed for the trip.
Sounds exhausting! That’s a lot of energy packed into such a little bird!
