Is it safe to touch a toad?
You may have noticed that toads are typically covered in warts. Be not afraid! Despite what you might have heard, toads cannot transmit their warts to humans. That's a myth!
That doesn't mean toads want to be picked up, nor does it mean they're completely harmless. It depends on the species. In the case of American toads, their skin produces a mild toxin that can be harmful to humans and other animals if it's ingested. Simply holding an American toad won't harm you, but it's still important to wash your hands afterward. Also, keep an eye on your pets because they may become curious and try to pick up or mouth a toad, which can expose them to the toxin.
