How do you make an herbal first-aid remedy for small cuts, bug bites, bruises, and rashes?
Common yarrow and common plantain are both excellent herbs for the skin and have traditionally been used externally for their anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiseptic properties. Common yarrow may also help reduce minor bleeding and repel insects.
In this video, learn how to make a poultice! Start by harvesting properly identified plants. Finely chop the leaves, then mash them into a paste using a mortar and a little water. Place the herbal paste in a piece of muslin and apply it directly to the affected area. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and repeat as needed.
In the field, you can also make a spit poultice by chewing the plant material and applying it directly to your skin.
