The Welcoming Schools theme for January is racial diversity! ![]()

As they grow, children can become curious about why some people look different than they do. Recognizing how special racial diversity is in our country is an important conversation to have with kids of all backgrounds. One way we can connect this theme to nature is by centering how an ecosystem needs diversity to thrive, just like a human-centered community. ![]()

Students in our classrooms make connections between the diversity in our human family and the incredible diversity reflected in nature. For example, reading "Mixed Me!" by Taye Diggs, one of the stories on this month’s book list, in one of our Nature Preschool classrooms provided a valuable teaching moment when, later that day, one of the preschoolers pointed at a photo on the phenology wall of three acorns, all of varying tones of brown. She was excited to share with her teacher “it's just like the Mom, Dad, and kid in the story we read today!”![]()

There are plenty of books focused on racial diversity and, while there are many good books that feature non-human characters, it’s best to find books depicting human characters to represent the kinds of diversity kids will encounter in their lives.![]()
