Have you ever walked on the moon?
Last week, the Cottontails were introduced to the solar system and spent a lot of time learning about the sun and the moon. During Morning Circle, they learned about how to safely view the sun with eclipse glasses. After viewing the sun from afar, the Cottontails got a close up view on the Nature Center’s SOS (Science on a Sphere), which links to real-time NASA and NOAA data.
In the SOS, they also got to see the moon! Everyone blasted off in their imaginary rocket ships, orbited the Earth, and landed on the moon. While walking around the sphere, the Cottontails pretended that they themselves were walking on the moon.
In our vast solar system, the Cottontails have so much more to explore!

Happy Black History Month!
Today, we want to highlight Dr. John Francis and his nonprofit Planetwalk. Francis is a decorated environmentalist known for his vow of silence and journey across the US.
After witnessing an oil spill in 1971, Francis drastically altered his lifestyle. He stopped riding in motorized vehicles and decided to become an activist. His decision did spark arguments between him and other people and, to prevent them, he vowed to stop talking altogether and to listen more instead.
Dr. John Francis founded the non-profit Planetwalk after graduating from college. The goal of Planetwalk was to focus on raising environmental awareness and education through pilgrimage. He started his journey across the US in 1983, stopping in between to get his masters degree from the University of Montana and his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He finally made it to the east coast in 1990, completing his journey. Not long after, Francis decided to break his seventeen year vow of silence on Earth day.
Since concluding his journey, Dr. John Francis has made many contributions to defend the environment. In 1990, he wrote oil spill regulations after joining the United States Coast Guard. In 1991, he was appointed United Nations Environmental Program Goodwill ambassador to the World's Grassroots Communities. In 2010, he became the first ever National Geographic Society Education Fellow. Through the years, Dr. John Francis continued to travel and inspire others through his non profit. He wrote multiple books about his journey and beliefs that continue to inspire others today.
