Is that a butterfly or a moth?![]()

The Virginia Ctenucha might be mistaken for a butterfly at first glance, but on closer inspection, you’ll notice it’s actually a moth. Some moths, like the Virginia Ctenucha, are active during the day—unlike most moths, which are nocturnal. They can oftentimes be observed drinking nectar from flowers, their only food source. While not as bright as most butterflies, the vibrant pops of orange and blue along the Virginia Ctenucha’s head and body make it stand out from other moths.![]()

When they’re caterpillars, Virginia Ctenucha come in two color variations: black and yellow. No matter what color the caterpillar is, it will always have bright red feet. The caterpillars are also very hairy. This hair not only makes them unappealing to predators, but they also use it to build their cocoons when the time comes. The cocoon is constructed in such a way that the Virginia Ctenucha is semi-visible inside as it undergoes its transformation.![]()

Moths begin emerging from their cocoons in late June, but most will emerge throughout July. They can be found in woodlands, fields, gardens, and wetlands throughout the northeastern parts of the United States and into Canada.![]()
