The land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants and animals, or collectively the land." - Aldo Leopold, 'The Land Ethic', 'A Sand County Almanac'Considered a Wisconsin hero, Aldo Leopold was born on this day in 1887. He was a renowned scientist and scholar, an exceptional teacher and philosopher, and a gifted writer and land steward. He is perhaps best known for 'A Sand County Almanac', read by millions of people around the world in their introductory studies of conservation. Locally, Aldo Leopold and his family worked tirelessly to restore land they purchased along the Wisconsin River, planting tens of thousands of pine trees. This frequent retreat for his family became known as ‘The Shack’. In Madison, Aldo Leopold founded Wisconsin’s Department of Wildlife Management and oversaw the ecological restoration of the Arboretum, a new concept to many in the 1930s. During a time in history when people chose ‘dominion over’ instead of ‘community with’ the natural world, ‘A Sand County Almanac’ melded exceptional poetic prose with keen observations of nature, quickly becoming 20th century literary landmark in conservation. The piece reflects a lifetime evolution of love, observation, and thought, resparking a philosophy that has guided many to discover what it means to live in harmony with the land and one another.Have you ever read ‘A Sand County Almanac’?
