Wisconsin is home to two types of cicadas: annual (Neotibicen spp.) and periodical (Magicicada spp.). These cicadas differ in their appearance, life cycles, and biology. Every year annual cicadas can be spotted throughout the Midwest during the hot summer days of July, August, and September. They have two- to five-year life cycles and do not emerge in huge numbers simultaneously. These cicadas are large (roughly 1 ¼ inch long), with dark black and green colors. Their wings have green veins and their eyes are dark. ![]()

Adult periodical cicadas can only be spotted in isolated areas in the southern part of the state and are mostly active during the month of June. These insects have long life cycles and their emergence is an amazing natural phenomenon that only occurs every 17 years in Wisconsin. To ensure survival and subsequent reproduction, periodical cicadas emerge in massive numbers to overwhelm predators. Periodical cicadas tend to be smaller than the annual cicadas and have black and orange colors. Their wings have orange veins and their eyes are distinctly red. ![]()
