We’re hosting a bird-focused Quarterly Earth Day

We’re hosting a bird-focused Quarterly Earth Day event this weekend!
Join us at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center on Saturday, January 25th at 10am for Bird & Nature Adventure, sponsored by FUN (Friends of Urban Nature) Groups, hiking through the grounds into Edna Taylor Conservancy. Afterwards, join us inside to make pinecone bird feeders that you can bring home to continue your observations there or hang on one of the trees at ALNC.
This event is hosted in partnership with the MESBA (the Monona East Side Business Alliance). No registration required.

“Owl pellets are kind of gross but I like findin

“Owl pellets are kind of gross but I like finding the tiny bones!” - Vacation Day student
Last Friday, the Vacation Day students dissected dried and sterilized owl pellets, using tweezers and a bone sorting chart to identify tiny bones from rodents, shrews, moles, and birds.
Owl pellets are made of indigestible materials that cannot pass through the owl’s digestive tract. Teeth, skulls, claws, fur, and feathers are compacted in the owl’s gizzard. Then, the owl regurgitates a pellet that is smooth and cylindrical.
At the beginning of this exercise, the students found that it was hard to extract the bones because the pellets were very compact. After a bit of work, they managed to find rodent skulls with big yellow teeth, thin pieces of ribs, and rounded vertebrates.
Dissecting pellets teaches useful information about what owls eat and provides for great discussion on predator-prey relationships.
