We bet tadpoles aren’t a species that you expect to see frozen in the ice.When we think of tadpoles, we usually associate them with spring. Truthfully, tadpoles are around all year, surviving the coldest temperatures beneath the ice. Some frogs, like the green frog, lay their eggs late in the season. The tadpoles that hatch from these clutches live as tadpoles through winter. Other frogs, like bullfrogs, take two to three years to complete metamorphosis, spending multiple winters as tadpoles. Frogs that lay their eggs in deeper bodies of water, such as ponds, typically spend more time as tadpoles.There are many outside factors that can impact a tadpole's metamorphosis. Warm water can speed up metamorphosis, while cool temperatures can slow it down. A safe environment with plenty of food can delay a tadpole's metamorphosis, while an overcrowded pond or stressful environment can speed it up. Winter conditions likely have a big impact on delaying a tadpoles metamorphosis until spring. Tadpoles that survive through winter have an advantage over frogs that metamorphose earlier in the year. Tadpoles require less oxygen than frogs, making survival under the ice easier, while overwintering frogs need less oxygen than they do in summer, the lack of oxygen can still take a toll on them. Winter tadpoles are also able to spend more time eating and growing as tadpoles since they take longer to reach metamorphosis. The more time a tadpole spends growing, the larger it will be when it becomes a frog. Larger frogs have the advantage when it comes to competing for territory and mates, as well as avoiding predators. Unfortunately, these tadpoles found frozen in the pond likely did not survive. While tadpoles can survive under the ice, they can only survive being directly frozen for short periods of time. One thing is for sure though, there are plenty more tadpoles living under the ice this winter. What signs of winter do you see?
