Reddish-brown flowers are hiding under heart-shaped leaves in the Kindergarten Woods…This strange plant is called ‘wild ginger’ (Asarum canadense) and, even though it is not related to the commonly-known tropical varieties, its aromatic rhizomes and roots have a ginger-like fragrance and flavor.Wild ginger is fairly easy to identify with its heart-shaped leaves that are 3-6’’ wide. The upper surface of its leaves are slightly hairy and shiny, while their stalks are covered with long, white hairs. The flowers are unique because they are petalless and hidden in leaf litter. Pull the leaves back to find them and see their three triangular lobes, which are actually sepals, that are reddish-brown and curl backwards. Their color attracts flies and beetles as their main pollinators.Mildly toxic, wild ginger isn’t meant to be eaten whole. The best way to use it, is to steep it in water as the toxin is not particularly water soluble. It makes a delicious ginger tea that tastes almost exactly like tropical ginger, but without any of the heat. The extract can also be used in other ways, from cocktails to ice-cream! It is important to note that wild ginger should not be steeped in alcohol or vinegar because this process extracts the toxin, leeching it into the liquid.Wild ginger is sought for its medicinal properties. Externally, the roots can be used as a poultice to treat open wounds and skin inflammation because they have antibiotic properties. Internally, it has been used to treat various ailments, including digestive disorders, fever, headaches, and more. Many Indigenous Nations also used wild ginger as a contraceptive by slowly boiling the roots in a small quantity of water over a long period of time. For this reason, pregnant women should avoid wild ginger. What signs of spring do you see?
